We got the holiday season off to a great start with our now traditional trip to New England for Thanksgiving. What a treat to go to the Minichs on Thursday for dinner, have a great Hart family hike on Friday, head to Boston for the annual UM-OSU game at a sports bar with Pete and then head down to Providence for a few days with the Cruzes. We’re lucky to have such cool and warm families.

We’ll meet Scott and Janet in Miami Beach again this year and then head back to Sarasota for Christmas. Travel plans beyond that are up in the air (so to speak) as I write.

I see that there are still some openings on the calendar, so if you want to make a return visit, or get your picture up on the wall, make your reservations soon.

We want to wish all of our dear friends in Ann Arbor, Sarasota, and scattered around the globe and our families – nuclear and extended – joy, safety, health and peace. We are so fortunate to have all of you in our lives.

First, our dear friends Walt and Bronwyn Pedano, came to Ann Arbor for a few weeks and stayed in a VRBO on the Old West Side. What a great treat for us to get to share our town with them – Sonic Lunch, Zingerman’s, The Arb, the Ark and all the other great stuff A2 has to offer. Seems like as soon as we got there, it was time for the annual cottage on Conesus Lake. All the usual suspects – and a few new folks as well. We had great weather and it was great to see everyone -loved that George and Jess came; we hadn’t had a George Hart sighting in some time. Other than hanging out a little at Mid Lake with John and Ginger Gajar, most of the summer was spent on our music. The Solo Duo played a bunch of open mics – we even did the Ark stage at Art Fair. Heart Cruise (my duo with Kevin) started playing the open mic at Brewed Awakenings pretty regularly, often with Dave Solo – always a treat. What a great bunch of musicians we met there; we’ll miss them this winter. Just before we left, I had a great weekend in Pittsburgh with my main gal pal, Patty Niles. We had dinner with the soon-to-be-wed Kristin Hart and Kevin Macksamie and another dear friend, Peggy Stubbs. On the way down, we stopped in Nashville for a couple of days and had a good ol’ time, went to the Ryman and the Country Music Hall of Fame and generally soaked it all in getting ready for Watermelon Wine with Bill Scott and Keith Townsend.

We liked Prague and loved Budapest, especially the Szechenyi Baths and our Hungarian cooking class; paprika, anyone? We also really enjoyed the great public transportation in both towns and could easily navigate them on our own. We’re so glad we added a layover in Amsterdam and plan to go again when we can stay longer. The weather was great and we would highly recommend visits to all three fascinating and historic cities.

We met Scott and Janet Erickson in Miami for the holidays had a great time, and ended up in Sarasota to kick of guest season. And what a season it […]

We met Scott and Janet Erickson in Miami for the holidays had a great time, and ended up in Sarasota to kick of guest season. And what a season it was! Is there such a thing as a quadfecta? If so, we hit a full Providence quadfecta with visits from George and Pam, Ethan, Julie and Nate, Phoebe and Joel and Jes. We also had the Brian Hart family, John, T, Dan and Laura and Kristin and Kevin on the Hart side. Walt and Bronwyn came, along with god-daughter Lea Kone to round out the family members. Beth Clarke came for the Oscar party (yes, we won the Oscar contest) and we did well from Ann Arbor too. Not only did George Fahmie and Judith Cawhorn visit, but our dear friends John and Ginger Gajar closed on a place about 20 minutes away. Seems to me that, though we’ve come to Florida, we are bringing our homeboys and girls with us and we couldn’t be happier about it!

The icing on the cake has been Billy and Becky Scott coming down. Along with Keith and Anna Townsend we now have a Maine community and, better yet, a band! Watermelon Wine, our country roots band, actually had – among other gigs – a regular Friday night job at Spanky’s Restaurant. It’s hard to convey how much fun we had playing both tunes from the old Appalachian days and new stuff as well. Ellie still sat in at the Monday night blues jam at the 5-O Club and we enjoyed catching Skip Eaton play whenever we could. Music is a huge part of our lives in Florida. If you haven’t been down to see us – or even if you have – reserve your time on the calendar to the right of this page – C’mon down!

It’s hard to believe we’re nearing the end of another year! I guess time flies when you’re old.

2014 started out with the sad loss of my sister, Barby (see post below). We are still waiting to hear what discoveries have come from the donation of her brain to UC Davis but we hope that doing this will in some way help all of us gain more insight into autism – its causes and its treatments. The PBS series on the brain that will mention her is due to be aired in April; we are all curious to see it.

Last winter in Sarasota deepened our connections down here. Listening to Skip Eaton and Al Fuller at the 5 O’clock, Ellie’s yoga class and Meditation Group, birding, the Sunday night drum circle – life is rich and we’re starting to make real friends, especially Skip and Mary. Of course we love our guests, and we got a pretty good group down here last year – John and Ginger, Paul and Wendy, Dorothy and Bill, Mark and Marty and Scott and Janet from Ann Arbor and we got Brian Hart’s family and Gary and Debbie and then Lea Kone, from upstate New York. Who am I forgetting? Please leave a comment below. And, if you’d like to make the list next year, please reserve your time on the calendar to the right of this post.

We had two fantastic trips last year (see posts below) to largely Spanish-speaking areas, so Ellie worked on Spanish and joined Johanna’s kitchen class in Ann Arbor. Although this year was a wash-out as far as the boat was concerned (long story – but can you say “blown head gasket”?) we still had a wonderful summer, hanging out with friends, going to Conditioning for Life Class (owe it all to Dan), and playing with the band for ellie and golf for Kevin. Kevin really enjoyed Radrick Farms this year and is swinging as well as ever. Ellie joined forces with bandmate, Dave Solo, and they formed a duo that played several times and even cut a CD in Mark Hauptschein’s studio (copies available on request). We also had a nice little trip to Boulder to see Patience and my cousin Anna. Boulder is cool and we plan to go back when it isn’t also freezing.

As for this winter in Sarasota, we’re pleased that John and Ginger will be renting nearby for three months and our old friend and music pal, Bill Scott, bought a place in Ellenton. We are already in rehearsal with Kevin playing U-Bass (a trick we picked up from Dave Solo), Ellie on vocals and percussion and Bill playing pretty much everything else and running the show.

Here is wishing all of our friends and family great happiness for the holidays and throughout 2015. Come and see us in Sarasota (November through April) or in Ann Arbor (May through October). Merry Christmas!

Our second big trip this year was to Spain and Portugal with Walt and Bronwyn Pedano. We flew into Barcelona on Catalan Day and spent five days seeing the Gaudi, walking the Ramblas, eating tapas and exploring Barcelona. We went to Camp Nou to see Barca play/beat Atletico Bilbao. From there we took a train up to San Sebastian set on its beautiful bay where we had a day at the beach and then drive over to Bilbao to see the Geary-designed Guggenheim Museum – fabulous! We took a train to Madrid and stayed there another five days. We spent time at the Prado and Reina Sofia Museums and soaked up the art and architecture of Madrid from the Palacio Real to the Puerto Del Sol, Retiro Park and other landmarks. And, of course, we went to another couple of soccer matches. Real Madrid wasn’t in town and I’m just as glad – Atletico Madrid, in their run-down old stadium in the heart of town stole our hearts with their enthusiasm and spirit. We also saw another La Liga team, Getafe out in the suburbs, but we were pretty spoiled by then.

After a side trip to Toledo with its old city and magnificent cathedral, we drove through the olive groves to Granada with the even more spectacular Alhambra. We had another day at the beach in Nerja on the Costa Del Sol before driving through the White Hill Towns with stops in Grazalema and Ronda. Last stop is Spain was probably the most Spanish place of all – Sevilla, home of Flamenco. The show we saw was spectacular – one male and one female dancer, a guitarist and a singer.

After a stop in Tavira, Portugal, we headed west as far as one can go to Cape Sagres at the southwest tip of Europe. We loved this windswept little town with its empty beach and the ancient sailor’s school where Columbus and Vasco De Gama learned to navigate. Last stop was Lisbon where you get lost in the Alfama while the Fado music pours out onto the narrow streets after dark

In March we went to South America on a University of Michigan trip. Although I normally enjoy vacation planning and travelling on my own, I must say this was a terrific experience and I would recommend these kinds of trips. Not only did we get to travel with our dear friends, John and Ginger Gajar, but we much enjoyed spending time with the others on the trip and we had a truly perfect guide in Emiliano Rio. Destinations included Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls near the Brazilian border, Bariloche in Patagonia, a gorgeous trans-Andes journey using 3 boats and 4 buses, and then Puerto Varas, Santiago and Valparaiso in Chile. It was a fantastic and educational trip. I even learned the Argentinian National Anthem in Spanish.

On February 11 my brother, George, called me with the news that our sister, Barby, had passed away suddenly at the group home she lived in in Silver Springs, Maryland. It was indeed a shock; in fact, I had just finalized arrangements to go to visit her. Instead that trip became a remembrance shared with CSAAC employees – Community Services for Autistic Adults and Children, the fine organization that provided housing, care, activities and support for her from 1985 until her death.

As someone diagnosed very early with the disease, she provided an opportunity for study which was not lost on my brilliant brother and the family has donated her brain to UC Davis. We will miss our visits to the DC area several times a year to see her, her caregivers, and our dear friends there, Doug Bellis and Suzanne English. An interesting side note is that PBS is doing a series on the human brain, narrated by David Eagleman, author of the very interesting book Incognito, and they are planning a short segment about Barby on the program, scheduled to air sometime in April of 2015.

Barby was a fascinating character and I learned so much about her condition and about human nature as people would react to her. We all miss her very much.

We had a great trip to Oregon with Scott and Janet – Portland, Cannon Beach and then lots of Willamette Valley Wineries – a great time and a full wine cellar. We headed into Ellie’s party with the full wine cellar, but soon discovered we left the party with more wine than we started with – a testimony to the quality of our friends, which was also confirmed by the attendance and revelry at the party itself. Ellie’s band (named IB60 for the evening) did their rock ‘n’ roll thing and with nearly 100 people in attendance and it was a truly great time. Click here for a video of the party if you missed it. After Kevin got back from a few weeks in Buffalo with brother Pete, we headed to New England for our traditional Thanksgiving with the Harts and then the Cruzes. How lucky we are to have family so close and to be able to see nearly everyone in one weekend. We do love that Fall trip!
